Savvy traveler that you are, you are aware of the considerable difference between a traveler and a tourist. A tourist finds comfort in packaged tours where everything they think, see, do and eat has been meticulously planned out for them, whereas a traveler wants to experience a place through the eyes, ears and taste buds of a local resident. A tourist can often be seen being transported along in an air-conditioned bus, elevated high above all the engaging theater that plays out on city streets.
Colonia, Uruguay: Not A Typical Border Town
Border towns aren’t supposed to be cute. Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay is certainly the exception. An easy 50-minute ferry ride across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires, Colonia, as it is known locally, is the oldest city in Uruguay and a World Heritage site listed by UNESCO as having special cultural significance.
